Tampa Bay Prostate
Center - Stages of Prostate Cancer
|
 |
|
The Staging of Prostate Cancer shown above, depends upon how far the cancer has spread throughout the body. Proper treatment depends upon accurate staging.
|
TREATMENT OPTIONS
- SURGERY removes all or part of the prostate in a Procedure
called "prostatectomy." Surgery is an option when the disease
is confined to the Prostate (localized disease).
- RADIATION THERAPY delivers to the affected areas High-energy
x-rays that destroy cancer cells. Radiation therapy is commonly used
in cases of localized disease.
- HORMONAL THERAPY blocks the activity of androgens (male
hormones). Hormonal therapy may be a treatment option if the
disease has spread beyond the prostate (locoregional or metastatic
disease) and is sensitive to hormones.
- TOTAL ANDROGEN DEPLETION Androgen activity may be blocked
surgically by removing the testes or chemically with estrogen or
antiandrogen therapy, or through a combination of these approaches.
- CHEMOTHERAPY is the use of drugs, or chemicals to kill cancer
cells. Chemotherapy may be used When a patient does not respond to
hormonal therapy or to alleviate symptoms.
